March 2024 power rate down; Davao Light warns of high consumption during the summer months

March 2024 power rate down; Davao Light warns of high consumption during the summer months

Residential customers of Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. (Davao Light) will see a decrease in their bills from March 12 to April 10, 2024, as the overall power rate is down to P8.9975 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from P9.2570 last month.

Even with the rate decrease this March, Davao Light reminds customers of possible high electricity consumption during the summer months.

The P0.2595/kWh decrease in power rate is due to reduced generation rates brought about by decreased power supply prices from the Philippine Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) in Mindanao and coal prices from the world market. A typical household with an average monthly electricity consumption of 200 kWh will experience a drop of P51.90 compared to their February billing.

Despite this, the power utility reminds customers of possible high electricity consumption, especially since El Niño is here.

According to the latest climate monitoring of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the country’s weather bureau, the ongoing El Niño will likely persist until March, April, and May 2024, as suggested by the majority of global climate models.

“The lower power rate is a positive development for our customers following slight rate increases in the past two months,” said Fermin Edillon, Davao Light Reputation Enhancement Department Head. “However, even with the decreased rate, our customers may still incur high electricity bills if power usage is not well managed. We encourage them to effectively manage their consumption to avoid high electricity bills.”

It is important to note that monthly bills are affected by two factors – rates and consumption.

Power rates as seen in Davao Light’s unbundled monthly bills are divided into 4 major components: Generation and Transmission, Distribution, Subsidies and Other Charges, and Government Charges and Taxes. Generation and transmission charges are pass-through charges that the distribution utility collects and pays to power suppliers and the transmission operator, respectively. Meanwhile, the distribution charge that goes to Davao Light, and approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has not increased since 2013.

Since power rates are uncontrollable, Davao Light customers can still manage their electricity bills by focusing on their consumption. They can conserve energy by lessening the number of hours or days used for a particular appliance. Moreover, with hotter days come the frequent and longer use of cooling appliances. Davao Light advises customers to open doors and windows or use electric fans with lower consumption than air conditioners.

“March is Fire Prevention Month. It is equally important to apply electrical safety measures alongside energy conservation, as it will benefit our family and community,” Edillon added.

For more energy conservation and safety tips, Davao Light customers may check its official Facebook page DavaoLightOfficial. Meanwhile, for the complete monthly rates, customers may check http://www.davaolight.com.

Davao Light, an Aboitiz Power Corporation subsidiary, aims to provide its customers with a front-seat vantage point regarding its services, including the sourcing and pricing of its electricity. This is in line with the mission of the company to deliver, at the most reasonable cost, safe and reliable electric service to the people and businesses it serves.

International day of climate action 2022

Mitigate adverse effects of environmental consequences

𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐

Every 24th of October, the International Day of Climate Action is commemorated around the world, a celebration to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of climate change and global injustice, some of which are already clearly visible throughout the world.

The celebration highlights the importance of our collective actions in creating measures to mitigate adverse effects of environmental consequences such storms, intense drought, heatwaves, rising sea levels, warming of oceans, and habitat destruction.

Let us reduce our carbon footprints as our way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As Climate Action requires the participation of everyone to slow climate change successfully, we must improve our adaptation to climate-caused issues, integrate climate change measures into policies, and more!

The 3Rs of life …. Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose

Obsessed with recycling, my latest was to purpose the used “paint can holder” as holders of my hanging plants.

And related to the 3Rs, this event of the Watsons and SM Cares is really a welcome move. Looking forward to more events like this here in our city.

Dispose e-wastes responsibly

Since time again and again we are reminded of this …. Be responsible in disposing your garbage !.

An advocate of proper waste disposal and protecting the environment, this retail store again thru its SM Care program came up with a drop off point for our e-wastes.

Here’s a story on e-wastes disposal ….

Dispose e-wastes responsibly

Every year, the world produces more electronic waste (e-waste) than the last due to advancements in technology that shorten the average life spans of gadgets and electronics.

According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020 report, the world generated about 53.6 million metric tons (Mt) of e-waste in 2019, a 21-percent jump from 44.4 Mt in 2014. It is projected to increase to 74.7 Mt. by 2030.

What makes e-waste worse compared to most other types of waste is that, if not correctly disposed of, it can release dangerous chemicals like lead, mercury, and lithium, which are toxic to the environment, most especially to humans.

Hence, it is essential to dispose of e-waste responsibly and in an organized manner. Not only will this help ensure human safety and health, but it will also help minimize the negative impact of its disposal on the environment.

As a responsible member of the community, SM Supermalls, through the SM Cares Program on Environment and supported by SM Cyberzone, launches its Electronic Waste Collection (EWC) Program. This corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiative encourages mall shoppers, communities, and individuals to bring their old gadgets and other e-waste for proper disposal by accredited hazardous waste collection partners.

“We at SM are committed to continuously look for ways and means to better care for the planet and to support the communities where our malls are present, including addressing the growing problem of e-waste,” said Engr. Liza B. Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Head of SM Supermalls Program on Environment and Sustainability.

“We must collaborate with the community and work together to promote responsible solid waste management and the proper disposal of hazardous wastes. We cannot do it alone, and we will need everyone’s help,” Silerio adds.

Feel free to responsibly dispose your e-wastes now at the collection sites located at the SM Cyberzone in SM City Davao (2/F, fronting Spigen, Annex) and SM Lanang Premier (3/F, fronting Information Booth).

Acceptable electronic waste includes old or broken mobile phones, mobile phone chargers, power cords, commercial batteries, earphones/earbuds, calculators, printer ink and toner cartridges, small gadgets, and computer wiring, among others.

Got more wastes to dispose apart from damaged gadgets? Join SM’s Trash to Cash program, where you can sell recyclable items like plastic and PET bottles, tin and aluminum cans, metal cookware, and newspapers every first Friday and Saturday of the month in SM Lanang Premier’s Open Parking D, and in SM City Davao’s Open Parking C. /SM PR

Connect2Earth

At the website of WWF-Philippines it states

“Earth Hour is a global environmental movement of WWF, aimed at inspiring and empowering individuals, businesses, organizations, and governments to take tangible action for the planet. It has grown from a symbolic event in Sydney 2007 to the world’s largest grassroots environmental movement spanning over 7,000 cities and 180 countries and territories. As the movement grows, the one-hour lights-out event continues to be the symbol of a broader commitment toward the planet. The core message of Earth Hour lies in going Beyond the Hour – on what tangible action you can do after the lights go back on”.

This year the one-hour lights-out took place on Saturday, March 30, 2019 from 8:30pm to 9:30 pm.

In Davao City, we joined the Earth Hour 60+ at SM City Davao Ecoland.

Yes, the message “Go Beyond The Hour And Do Your Share” is very valid, a call that we  need to respond.  It’s kinda difficult I know. But it has to be done and it should be now because we need to #Connect2Earth.

Currently I responded to the call on “repurpose plastics” to come up with #ecobricks.  I started filling plastic bottles with anything plastics that I encounter everyday and also told members of my household not to throw plastics but collect and place them in the designated container.

I thought of building a pet house for my cat Orange.  We are in the process of filling the bottles with plastics from the basic items that we bought packed in plastics.

56119959_10218179527016856_2197407218272305152_nI also started planting flowers on plastic containers of juices, milk, coffee instead of buying flower pots.  I did not only repurpose plastics but I also save on money and the environment most especially.

We collect anything plastic so it won’t go into the ocean as marine creatures might ingest them or  clog waterways that will cause flooding.

I am doing this for my children and all the children and for the love of  #MotherEarth.
