DOST XI installs STARBOOKS in Taga-Ibo National High School

The Department of Science and Technology XI deployed Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Stations (STARBOOKS) in the remote area of Taga-Ibo National High School, Barangay Malamba, Marilog District, Davao City recently.

Established in 1981, Taga-Ibo National High School is composed of 176 students in elementary and more than a hundred in junior high school, with six teachers and one principal. The school is 45 kilometers (27.81 miles) away from Davao City downtown proper.

STARBOOKS is a user-friendly, stand-alone information source developed to reach those with limited or no access to science and technology information resources, most especially geographically-isolated and economically-challenged schools and communities in the country.

300 gigabytes of data containing hundreds of thousands of digitized science and technology resources were installed in the computer of Mr. Leandero Lucero, Head Principal, for offline consumption of students and teachers.

Lucero thanked DOST XI for the materials, adding “Rest assured that this will be put to good use. This may be the first and hopefully not the last. Thank you.”

Learning materials such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, and educational toys (from Quota International and DOST XI) were also donated. They will be placed in the reading corner of each classroom.

Tagum Learning Commons, RP’s ‘Most Innovative Library’

The Tagum City Library and Learning Commons was adjudged Most Innovative Public Library of the Philippines. The award was presented during the 1st ASEAN Virtual Conference of Public Librarians on August 25, 2021.

Cited under Building/Physical Setup Category, the national award was presented by the National Library of the Philippines and The Ford Foundation as part of the 2021 Gawad Parangal sa Natatanging Propesyunal na Tagapangasiwa at Tagapaglingkod ng Pampublikong Aklatan as said in a press statement released by the Tagum City Information Office. The City Government of Tagum through the leadership of Mayor Allan Rellon and Vice Mayor Eva Lorraine Estabillo has always been aiming at the forefront in advancing knowledge, cultivation and management, infrastructures, and services of the city.  The public library is housed inside the world-class Tagum City Historical and Cultural Center. 

“This library is but a start of yet another journey for us towards the fulfillment of these dreams. I am confident we shall make it happen,” Mayor Rellon expressed, citing the various programs that will be implemented by the library.

The Management and Staff of the Tagum City Library and Learning Commons attend the virtual awarding ceremony for its “Most Innovative Public Library Award” handed out by The Asia Foundation and the National Library of the Philippines.

Designed primarily by Architect Hazel Buen, the facility envisioned a space that deviates from the traditional library setup by making it into a spacious, bigger, and vibrant learning hub.

In continuing for excellence amidst pandemic, the library’s programs will include the organization of book lover’s club, regular monthly storytelling sessions on IP stories, observance of the National Book Month celebration, digital services improvement, operationalization of the Center for Tagumenyo studies, and bookmobile libraries in the barangays.

SSS improves mobile app for easier use

The Social Security System (SSS) launched an improved version of its mobile application to allow its users to access information about their membership and contributions as well as for members to apply for salary loans and submit maternity notification via this app’s easy-to-navigate features. 

“For the mobile app, the SSS introduced enhanced features to allow for easy navigation and effortless information presentation for its users,” SSS President and CEO Aurora C. Ignacio said. 

Department of Finance (DOF) Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, who is concurrent ex-officio Chairman of the Social Security Commission (SSC), has, even before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, called on the SSS to use digital tools to make it easier for its members and pensioners to access its services without the need for face-to-face transactions.

The Finance Chief said the digitalization of the SSS’ system will also help cut overhead costs for the pension fund. 

He said the SSS needs to continue to be prudent in managing its expenses, given that its task involves taking care of the hard-earned savings of Filipino workers in the private sector.

Ignacio said the improved SSS mobile app provides SSS members with, among others, updates on their membership contributions, application and status of salary loans, information on benefit claims, and online contribution payment services.

For employers, the app provides them with information about their contributions and loan payments and reimbursement claims, among other services. 

The SSS mobile app was introduced to the public on April 23, 2018 and was initially available in the Google Play Store for Android phones and the App Store for iPhones and other iOS devices.

It became available in the Huawei AppGallery on October 7, 2019. 

On the year the app was launched, it was downloaded 824,006 times. This number continuously increased since then, with the total volume of downloads hitting 2,296,967 and 7,378,627, respectively, in 2019 and 2020.

“The total cumulative number of downloads of the SSS Mobile App as of 31 May 2021 has already reached 15,359,070,” Ignacio said. 

The new, enhanced version was made available in the Huawei AppGallery last May 30, and in Google Play the following day, she said. 

Ignacio said the SSS is now in talks with Apple to make the app available for iOS devices “in the near future.”

Earlier, Ignacio reported that the online filing and registration of new employees as SSS members, along with the submission of most forms and benefit claims have been made mandatory as of July 15 last year. 

The release of loans and benefits to members, except for unbanked pensioners, have also been made “cheque-less” or online through the use of PesoNet and other electronic payment systems beginning July last year. 

Ignacio said that since July 15, 2020, the submission of the Maternity Notification Form for pregnant female SSS members and the Sickness Notification Form were required by the SSS to be done online, along with the Retirement Benefit Claim of members who are at least 65 years old and Land-based OFWs and Voluntary Members who are at least 60 years old and the application for Unemployment Insurance Benefit (UIB). 

The online filing of the applications for the Calamity Loan and Salary Loan were made mandatory by the SSS on June 15 last year, while the filing of the Sickness Benefit Reimbursement Claim of employers was required to be done online as of July 1, 2020. 

The online enrollment of bank accounts in the My.SSS or SSS online portal has become mandatory for member-employees since June 2020 and for their employers starting July 2020. 

This online enrollment of disbursement account has enabled the SSS to automatically deposit benefits to the enrolled bank accounts of worker-members and their employers.

The SSS has also made mandatory the online filing of applications for the COVID-19 Calamity Loan Assistance Package (CLAP) since the program was launched on June 15 last year. 

Online filing of Funeral Benefit Claims for SSS member-claimants was made available starting July 2020 and was made mandatory by August 2020, Ignacio said. 

The online filing of the Retirement Benefit Claim of employed members who are 60 to 64 years old has likewise been made mandatory starting August last year.

In Davao: Cacao is Life …

The growing of Cacao that is being pushed extensively in this region has now gone to the different barangays, towns, cities and provinces.

Some farmers even earned awards for producing top of the line seeds.

As the industry players said there is high demand of cacao not only here in the Philippines but abroad.

This development encouraged more farmers to grow the crop.

We have our own little farm that we planted the whole area with cacao.

We also process the beans for our regular supply of  hot chocolate drink.

Just like other farmers, we process the fruit up to fermentation.  It gets better price when it’s being processed.

The government also had consistently been helping these farmers and recently it provided assistance to the farmers in Davao Oriental.

DA-PRDP Turns Over P14M worth of Cacao Subproject in DavOr

The Department of Agriculture Philippine Rural Development (DA-PRDP) Project turned over “The Fermented Cacao Beans Marketing Enterprise Sub-project” to its lead proponent group NAGMASID Agrarian Reform Cooperative in a ceremony held July 1 at San Isidro, Davao Oriental.

Present during the turn-over ceremony were Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang, San Isidro Municipal Mayor Justina Yu, Regional Director for Region XI and PRDP Mindanao Project Director Ricardo Oñate, PSO Mindanao I-REAP head Ronnie Yulo, municipal local government officials, as well as cooperative managers and members of the sub-project’s recipient proponent groups.

The enterprise sub-project, which is funded by DA-PRDP under its Investment for Rural Enterprise for Agricultural Productivity (I-REAP) component, will establish post-harvest and marketing facilities in the seven (7) municipalities of Davao Oriental under seven cluster member cooperatives with the aim of producing and consolidating quality fermented beans for delivery to Malagos Chocolates, which is the sub-project’s identified buyer. Aside from the lead proponent group NAGMASID which is in San Isidro, the six other groups are the Panikian Cacao Small Farmers Association (PCSFA) in Banaybanay, Nagkahiusang Kristohanong Mag-uuma sa Cocornon Cooperatives (NAKMACCO) in Lupon, Governor Generoso Cacao Growers Association (GGCGA) in Governor Generoso, Limot Mandaya Tribal Multi-purpose Cooperative (LIMTRIMCO) in Tarragona, Yagakauyon na Kooperatiba sa San Ignacio in Manay, and the Davao Oriental Coconut Industry Development Coalition (DOCCIDEC) in the city of Mati.

Among the equipment and facilities that were turned over to the cooperatives were 14 solar tunnel dryers, 7 fermentation facilities, 1 warehouse, 1 cargo truck, 7 weighing scales, and three motorcycles and a P1 million check as a counterpart loan care of the Provincial Cooperative Office.

The proponent groups will also be provided with 8 units of moisture meters that will complete the list of facilities and equipment to the sub-project.

Cost of this project amounted to P14,524,197 benefitting 924 households in the seven sub-project sites of the province.

Governor Dayanghirang in his message during the turn over ceremony which coincided with the Davao Oriental’s 53rd Foundation Day,  expressed the provincial government’s unrelenting support to cacao farmers.

“Our support will not just end after the distribution of seedlings but will continue with provisions for processing and marketing, with assistance on where to sell your products inorder to maximize your income,” Dayanghirang said.

He said we can also add value to our produce given the quality of our cacao beans and the products we can market also to other countries.

Gov. Dayanghirang urged the farmers to work hard together inorder to make the cacao industry in their province prosper.

“We at the provincial government together with the municipal officials and the national government through the Department of Agriculture will continue to provide the assistance necessary to make this cacao project grow,” he said.

Director Ricardo Oñate on the other hand said, this sub-project was made possible through concerted effort and continued partnership which is in line with DA’s new direction on the “Plant, Plant, Plant Program”.

Onate who admitted there are still lot of works to do also said that in line with their Department’s thrust, they will continue to support the farmers and fisher folks of the province as well as provide livelihood to former insurgents.

Even with the pandemic cacao farmers continue with their production following the protocols set by the government.
