SMALL ENTERPRISES TAKE A BIG STEP WITH SM LANANG’S SM4SMEs

SMALL ENTERPRISES TAKE A BIG STEP WITH SM LANANG’S SM4SMEs

SM Lanang is helping Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Mindanao take a big step forward by providing them with a prime mall space for a friendly price through the SM4SMEs Community Bazaar.

Every week since April 3, at least six to ten MSMEs are given the opportunity to market their products at the mall’s Atrium for larger exposure at a very minimal fee.

A wide array of quality local products ranging from handicrafts to palatable food items are displayed at the SM4SME Community Bazaar at SM Lanang’s Atrium every week.

Mugna Leather Arts, Zerts Kitchen, Knuts Lucky G Nomes, Weave and Dream X Love, MD, Villabakes, and The Rainbow Loop Project were spotlighted by the program during its opening week on April 3-9.

Meanwhile, LustrousDvo, Cacao Culture, Saladista, Buko Pie Station, Mat’s Deli Goods, and returning SM4SMEs purveyors Knuts Lucky G Nomes, Mugna Leather Arts, and Zerts Kitchen also took the center stage during the second week of the program which ran from April 10-16.

An Apo Whang-Od-inspired polymer clay doll was displayed by one of the participating MSMEs at SM Lanang’s SM4SME Community Bazaar.

The SM4SMEs program already contributed a whopping P2.6 Million worth of accumulated sales to the participating MSMEs during its first month alone.

Central to the SM4SMEs’ goal is to support small enterprises by giving them access to the mall’s most strategic location, making them gain loyal customers in the process who could help spread the word about their brands and support the sustainability of their business in the long run.

Through the help of the Department of Trade and Industry XI (DTI XI), SM Lanang was able to identify and connect with several innovative and talented MSME operators in Mindanao who have already demonstrated their world-class potential in their respective crafts.

SM Supermalls, drawing inspiration from its humble beginning as a small enterprise called ShoeMart, has made significant strides in supporting the growth of MSMEs across the country over the years. Among its most recent MSME programs was the StartUp Market which was launched in 2021 in several SM malls nationwide. Some of these participating MSMEs had grown to become SM’s permanent tenants.

GSIS  investment portfolio grows to P891-B in 2021

GSIS investment portfolio

GSIS  investment portfolio grows to P891-B in 2021

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) expanded its investment portfolio to P890.59 billion in 2021, up by 5.22 percent from P846.4 billion in 2020, according to its report to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III.

“The growth came primarily from the GSIS’s well-positioned foreign currency denominated investments,  particularly in the equities market and the infrastructure sector,” GSIS President and General Manager Rolando Macasaet said.

Macasaet stated in his report to Sec. Dominguez that while the pension fund’s peso-denominated investments dipped 4.38 percent last year to P633.31 billion from P662.3 billion in 2020, its foreign currency-denominated assets rose to P257.26 billion from P184.1 billion in 2020.

The GSIS’ foreign currency-denominated equity investments grew 345 percent from P15.62 billion in 2020 to P69.58 billion in 2021.

Its investments in foreign-currency denominated cash and short-term time deposits also increased to P22.17 billion in 2021 or 236 percent more than the P6.6 billion balance in 2020.

The foreign-currency denominated infrastructure assets of the GSIS also contributed to the growth in the pension fund’s investment portfolio, rising by 50.9 percent from P17.45 billion in 2020 to P26.34 billion in 2021.

On the other hand, foreign currency-denominated fixed income assets decreased from P144.43 billion in 2020 to P139.17 billion in 2021 due to maturities and market valuation.

The GSIS was also able to grow its peso-denominated cash assets from P59.34 billion in 2020 to P74.81 billion in 2021.

Its peso-denominated investments in the equities market grew from P194.08 billion in 2020 to P212.18 billion last year.

The drop in peso-denominated investments in infrastructure, from P14.52 billion in 2020 to P4.66 billion in 2021, was due to the completion of some projects and divestment (disposal of asset) which yielded for GSIS a gain of P5.11 billion.

GSIS’s peso-denominated fixed income investments decreased from P394.34 billion to P341.66 billion in 2021.

Sec. Dominguez commended GSIS under Macasaet’s leadership for efficiently managing the state pension fund to offer more benefits for its members in the  government workforce.

Macasaet said that in 2021, the GSIS expanded its acceptance of loan payments from members through digital channels to make it more convenient for them amid the pandemic and to improve the pension fund’s collection efficiency.

As of December 2021, GSIS has included the digital apps of the Land Bank of the Philippines (LandBank) and Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) as additional electronic payment channels for its members.

The pension fund also enhanced the features of its GSIS Touch mobile app to include tentative computation and application for loans and claims, scheduling of Annual Pensioner Information Revalidation (APIR), and monthly notification on premium and loan payment posting.

The GSIS report also mentioned the launching of its “Ginhawa for All” program in November 2021, a rebranding campaign that features three  benefit bundles catering to the fund’s pensioners, active members, and former members.

The goal of the program is to make it easy, fast, and convenient for active and former members, and pensioners to access information on the benefits and services from the GSIS.

Macasaet said the GSIS has likewise adopted the contactless filing of claims and benefits.

Government employees, retirees, or other claimants may submit their application forms and other documents to GSIS through eGSISMO; email; postal mail or delivery courier; or drop boxes located in the lobbies of GSIS offices.

To assist its members struggling to cope with the economic shock triggered by the pandemic, three new Ginhawa Loan Programs were launched last year, namely: the Multipurpose Loan (MPL), a program that waives charges on all in-default loans; Computer Loan that offers P30,000-assistance to purchase a computer; and GSIS Financial Assistance Loan (GFAL)-Educational Loan, a study-now-pay-later program for kin of members.

The GSIS also implemented the Lease-with-Option-to-Buy  Program in August 2021 as a means to save occupants of its housing units with canceled or foreclosed accounts from being ejected.

Macasaet said the program aims to cushion the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on occupants of  GSIS residential units.

This program offers a lower monthly rental fee as compared to monthly amortization for Installment Sale.

SoapBerry: Of smelling success amid challenging times

Way to go with the Mentorship Program of DTI … as this beneficiary of the KMME program shared that sweet smell of SoapBerry to successfully penetrate the market ….

SoapBerry: Of smelling success amid challenging times

DAVAO CITY – Mr. Kevin Joven was not spared from the challenges which the pandemic has brought to many. However, instead of giving up, he gathered more courage to rise up and maximize his resources.

Mr. Joven was running two businesses – a water refilling station and a co-working/leisure hub – when the pandemic started. Both of these were affected, especially the latter when the local government issued a rule to close tourism-related businesses temporarily. He got depressed because he lost his family’s bread and butter in just a blink of an eye. But this experience didn’t stop him from finding another business opportunity, not only to help his family continuously but also to provide livelihood among friends who lost their jobs.

While having a tattoo session, a woman shared with him that his daughter knows how to formulate soaps. He then decided to invest in it, knowing that it could be the opportunity he was looking for.

In July 2020, SoapBerry, a line of cleaning materials such as hand soaps, anti-bacterial fabric conditioner, disinfectants and dishwashing liquid, was born. To jumpstart the promotion of his newly-discovered hope, he contacted several online sellers. He presented to them his quality products and how these can help them generate income for their respective households.

While his hands were full with his new business, he was also busy attending the Department of Trade and Industry-Davao City’s Kapatid Mentor Me (KMME) online program at least twice a week. There were times, too, when he had to deliver the products to his resellers personally while the KMME online sessions were still going on. He had no choice but to persevere because of his desire to succeed in his new endeavor. Thus, he didn’t mind his struggles. He completed the modules and presented his business improvement plan, which the KMME panelists accepted. He passed the final round of DTI’s mentoring program to his delight. He was one of the latest batch of KMME graduates from the city. He learned numerous tricks on how to handle a business during a pandemic.

“I am very grateful of the KMME program because it gave me the opportunity to have a clear plan for the direction of my new business,” he said.

Mr. Joven struggled yet he proved his resilience. For now, he is supplying cleaning materials to a hospital, some resorts, local government units and resellers inside and outside of Davao Region. He is also planning to develop innovative products and expand his market to different institutions.

“Sa pandemic na nahitabo karon, dili lalim atong gipang-agihan, ilabi na sa mga MSME. Gusto lang nako ipaabot ang mensahe nga maging resilient ta ug keep pushing if we don’t want to give up what we already started. Gitestingan sa pandemic atong character, kung asa gyud ta kutob, musukol ba ta or magpadaug sa krises. As an aspiring entrepreneur nga niagi aning pandemic, akong natun-an sa akong kaagi nga ‘pan’ – panalig sa Ginoo, paninguha, pangdiskarte, ug paningkamot (With the pandemic, the struggles we face are not easy, especially for us, the MSMEs. Despite that, I still want to share that we have to stay resilient as we keep on pushing towards success. Let’s not give up. The pandemic is just a test ot character. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I’ve learned the ‘pan.’ I’ve learned about trust in God, giving my best, maximize my potentials, and trying as much as I can),” he concluded.

DTI 11’s mentorship program produces 80 new graduates

The pandemic did not stop these MSMEs (micro, small and medium entrepreneurs) from learning how to make their businesses grow more as both government and private organizations taught them how to go through the process under the mentorship program spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Under this mentorship program were 80 new graduates with learning process held through virtual mentoring.

Sharing this story …..

DTI 11’s mentorship program produces 80 new graduates

DAVAO CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Region 11 has produced 80 new graduates of its mentorship program.

These micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from all over the region have successfully passed the qualifications and challenges set by the Kapatid Mentor Me – Money and Market Encounter (KMME-MME) Online 2020 program, which is being implemented in partnership with the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) – Go Negosyo. This batch graduated last November 5, after acing the activities and requirements during the entire duration of the virtual mentoring, which ran from July until November this year. So far, DTI-11 has already produced a total of 546 graduates since the program’s launching in 2016. For the fifth and sixth batches, which were conducted simultaneously, the graduates are composed of 19 MSMEs from Davao City, 14 from Davao del Sur, 21 from Davao del Norte, 13 from Davao Oriental, nine from Davao de Oro, and four from Davao Occidental.

The KMME Online, which kicked off last July 28 in the region, is aimed at helping MSMEs scale up their business through coaching        and mentoring. Business owners and practitioners in different functional areas of entrepreneurship serve as the coaches and mentors among the mentees.  The KMME has been implemented since 2016 as a 10-module mentorship program that optimizes weekly face-to-face interactions between the mentors and the mentees with the key goal of boosting the entrepreneurial capacity of the mentees through improved access to mentorship, money, and market (3Ms). This year’s run, though, was unique as it was implemented virtually following the new normal.

Aside from a 10-module mentorship, coaching sessions were added in the program to assist the mentees during the drafting of their Business Improvement Plans (BIPs) and improve their materials and presentations skills. Coaching is also envisioned to further develop their capacities in accessing capital and market; thus, enabling them to pivot and prepare for the new normal.

The mentees presented their final BIP to an expanded panel of evaluators composed of representatives from banks, online market platforms and other business support organizations.

After the program, the mentees enabled themselves to adopt innovative strategies and become sustainable in the “new normal.”

“With the CoVid-19 upending lives and businesses all over the world, the KMME became more relevant and necessary albeit in a virtual or digitalized form. Thus, the KMME Online was developed as the practical delivery mechanism for the same mentorship modules used to propel MSMEs to survive and thrive in spite of the unprecedented setbacks that now confront businesses of all types and sizes,” DTI-11 Regional Director Maria Belenda Q. Ambi said. DTI11/ER/jmm

Legacy Leisure Residences, by Davaoeños for Davaoeños

Giving you update on the soon to rise real property project of Davao home builders along Ma-a Road.

This is their story …..

Legacy Leisure Residences, by Davaoeños for Davaoeños.

The success of a business venture is knowing the sensitivities of its market. It’s a strength. To wear the same shoe and walk in it is an advantage. Who else can relate to a Davaoeño best than a fellow Davaoeño.

Behind Legacy Leisure Residence, the soon-to-rise vertical village along Ma-a, is CrisRon Holiday Builders, Inc. It’s a homegrown development company that merged two of Davao’s most respectable families in business. The joint venture, run by the next generation of entrepreneurs, may be new for two Davao families, but their individual achievements go decades back. Their names are woven in the economic tapestry of Davao.

Between the two enterprising families is a list of successful undertakings in the fields of retail, food, entertainment, commercial trade, transportation, health, hospitality, to name a few. What the market needed, they delivered, and always at an opportune time.

They are no strangers to real estate industry. Felcris Centrale, Holiday Oceanview Residences, Camp Holiday Resort, LinMar Apartelle and an ongoing project, Mt. Apo Tourist Inn, are some of the projects in their roster.

Operating the newest organization are two of the second generation businessmen— Clark Yap, who sits as the vice-president of CrisRon Holiday Builders, Inc., and Wesley Bangayan, taking charge as Legacy Leisure Residences’ vice-president for marketing.

Way before they earned their business management degrees abroad, Clark Yap and Wesley Bangayan started their training in the most unconventional way. Growing up, the sites of the operations were literally their playground, shared Yap. Unknowingly, tagging along with their parents was sort of an apprenticeship. As young men they were already exposed to the structures and idiosyncrasies of the companies. They grew up with it and in it.

CrisRon Holiday Buidlers, Inc.’s maiden project will be a unique undertaking—the creation a wellness-focused, resort-like vertical village. The themed development will give the residents a life of comfort, serenity and fun. It will be an “everyday staycation” in the center of the city.

“The Bangayans have constructed and run resorts and while the Yaps have pioneered the retail industry in Davao. This new project will bring the island resort living to the center of the city and fuse it with urban essentials to create an exciting living experience,” shared Yap.

“Legacy Leisure Residences will be built like it would be our own home. Being a local, we are aware what every Davaoeño wants when choosing a place to live in— privacy, a peaceful and secure community, spacious living environment, green spaces to breath, essentials within easy reach. Ultimately, at best value, the future residents of the condominium project will not just be investing on real estate property and high-value amenities but on the quality of life, too,” he said.

At Legacy Leisure Residences ‘breathing space’ will mean roomy residences, vast amenity areas and green expanse spread in almost 70% of the 2.8-hectare development. Resort-like will mean having their very own Olympic size swimming pool, spray park and zones for various sports.

“We are only utilizing 30% percent of the land area for four residential towers. This means residents will be able to experience privacy when heading out to the vast outdoor open space,” shared Wesley Bangayan.

Having the developer and project contractor under one umbrella company extends an extra assurance for the investors. Quality of work will be guaranteed, each step of the construction will be closely monitored, all design details will be attended to and materials will be of the best quality. The attention to structural integrity will be unwavering.

“Our experience in the construction industry and the system involved in real estate development assure our buyers that Legacy Leisure Residences will be worth their trust,” stated Yap, adding, “As developers we will put the best foot forward because we want each and every project to be a showcase of what CrisRon Holiday Builder, Inc. can do. Legacy Leisure Residences is a world-class development, and we will guarantee the building of more world-class communities in Davao where residents will be proud of their investment.”

Bangayan added, “We believe that building Legacy Leisure Residences is best done with having the heart and sensitivity of a local, of a soon-to-be resident. Trust us Davaoeños to build better homes for fellow Davaoeños to live in.”

Legacy Leisure Residences builds stronger connections with investors

A pandemic could not put down people’s drive to move forward.

Following still the protocols, this real estate industry player managed to bring their products to where it gets attention and interest.

This home builder from Davao City admitted they halted the business when the pandemic hit the ground in March putting the city into ECQ (enhanced community quarantine) then to GCQ (general community quarantine) in May til end of June 30 then progressed to MGCQ (modified general community quarantine) til July 15 and now to MGCQ Medium Risk up to end of July.

Despite all sectors subjected to community quarantine with Covid-19 (corona virus 2019) pandemic, this real estate business finds ways to push its project inorder to reach its market and prospective clients.

With several classification that this city and the region of Davao went through, this homegrown real estate business remains optimistic.

The Legacy Leisure Residences condominium project continued with its marketing and even flooded with inquiries.

It resumed operation in May with the GCQ classification.

More of their story is shared below  ….

During this challenging time:

Legacy Leisure Residences builds stronger connections with investors

With Davao placed under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) where the government has relaxed some restrictions starting mid-May and progressed further into Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ)as of July 1st, several business establishments were given the go signal to operate but still with strict safety guidelines.

This homegrown home builder were among those that closed offices and paused their business operations for a couple of months when the Covid-19 (corona virus 2019) pandemic hit the ground.

But with the two months that halted the businesses in Davao, did the selling stop for the soon to rise 4-tower, resort-type condominium along Ma-a Road ?

Legacy Leisure Residences’ Vice-President for Sales and Marketing Wesley Bangayan said when the quarantine started, we have to stop operations and close the office and showroom as the welfare of our clients and employees was our top concern.

“But adapting the work from home setting, we were in constant contact with the agents and clients. Most of the inquiries were made online through our website and Facebook page, and we were able to reply to them,” he said.

Legacy Leisure Residences, the newest condominium project of homegrown developer CrisRon Holiday Builders, Inc., broke ground in January 2020. It simultaneously launched its website (www.legacyleisureresidences.com.ph) and its social media pages in Facebook and Instagram. It melded the traditional form of marketing (direct selling and print) with the new (digital format).

He said when Davao went into GCQ in mid-May, the company resumed office operations and opened the showroom.

Back to operations & practicing safety protocols. The Legacy Leisure Residences showroom along Ma-a Road

Having prepared themselves on the digital format is an advantage, admitted Clark Yap, Vice-President of CrisRon Holiday Builders, Inc.

He said we expected a low turnout during these tough times but on the flip side, people where connected online via their mobile devices or computers a lot during the lockdown.

There were numerous inquiries through our website and Facebook page and minimal site visits by prospective clients from different demographics.

“We had to find ways to reach and educate more our clients and this paved the way of Legacy Leisure Residences offering virtual tours of our showroom, fast response to our website and social media inquiries, digital selling kits for our agents. Thru these, we were able to reach our target market across the border,” he said.

“With the new normal, most businesses are shifting into online selling and marketing, this will also be the approach of Legacy Leisure Residences. They will be enhancing their website to give prospective buyers the experience of Legacy Leisure Residence from the comfort of their homes with a click of a button,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yap said they will also be offering more flexible payment terms to lessen the burden of clients while we all recover from this pandemic.

The Legacy Leisure Residences is the latest project of two of Davao’s highly-respected business-oriented families, Bangayan and Yap.  With decades of experience and successful real estate and hospitality projects like Holiday Oceanview Residences, Camp Holiday Resort, Orchid Hills and Holiday Oceanview Village, they have earned the trust of the locals.

The construction of the condominium project may have halted for a while but Legacy Leisure Residences is now back on track. With a sister company as the contractor, they are keen in finishing the project on schedule.

“We Believe that Davao Real estate is the shining future in the industry and we trust Davao will be the first to recover from this pandemic,” said the two young businessmen.

Visit the Legacy Leisure Residences along Ma-a Road.

Still we have to follow quarantine rules.

Stay Safe Everybody  !

Let us continue the fight …. we need to STAY SAFE  and do our share to stop the spread of Covid-19 … So Please let us follow the protocols !  …. Soon this will be over  !  Never cease Praying  !  God bless everyone  ….

Safe Malling Welcomes Shoppers at SM in Davao

The opening of the country’s biggest retail store in Davao City almost two decades ago has changed the  shopping activities of Dabawenyos.  Why ? because it said “we’ve got it all for you at SM  !”

Very convenient indeed, all you need to do is come to this mall then do multiple tasks from marketing, shopping, banking, bills payment, dining and even transacting for passport application and renewal.

The members of the Davao media also meet here every Monday for “Kapihan”, Thursdays for “Davao Sports”, Fridays for “Connect” while business reporters get stories during Business Forum on Tuesdays in their favorite spa, DermPath.

It was more than shopping in the mall but a meeting place for friends, families, businessmen and even out of town residents.

This has been the norm ever since it opened early 2000.  And became hangout by some reporters to file their stories, students too for group study, bizmen closing deals or negotiation of new business partnership, etc. in their favorite coffee shops.

But came March, everything changed.  All of the above, except for accessing those essentials (banks, food, medicines) didn’t happen for two months because of the corona virus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Doors were closed except, as I said, for those essential establishments, Supermarket, Watsons, Banco de Oro.

From Community Quarantine the status of the city progressed into Enhanced Community Quarantine with stringent protocols imposed to all residents if only to control the spread of the virus.

Due to careful assessment and analysis by  the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Covid-19, Davao City which was one of the high-risk areas in the country, its status was downgraded to moderate and is allowed to shift to General Community Quarantine effective May 16, 2020.

During GCQ among those allowed to open are malls.  But SM wants its shoppers protected assuring Dabawenyos on safe malling …

Sharing this story ….

Safe Malling Welcomes Shoppers at SM in Davao

SM Lanang Premier and SM City Davao welcome back shoppers as the malls in Davao City begin to fully operate with essential and non-leisure services during the general community quarantine (GCQ).

PR - SM reopening 1

SM Lanang Premier follows strict safety and sanitation measures for reopening

The gradual re-opening follows the local government unit’s executive order on GCQ implementation: starting May 16, both Davao malls are to observe adjusted mall hours from 11 AM to 7 PM until further notice. SM Supermarket will operate from 7 AM to 7 PM.

As part of SM’s campaign to promote #SafeMallingAtSM, SM Lanang Premier and SM City Davao will continue to carry out strict safety and sanitation measures to assure shoppers that SM malls are safe and clean, complying with safety and sanitation protocols over and above government regulations.

PR - SM reopening 2

SM City Davao also promotes Safe Malling experiences with standard protocols in place

Both malls are thoroughly being cleaned and disinfected prior to the opening and throughout mall hours, especially in areas with heavy customer contact. Entrances are equipped with temperature checks, non-contact sanitizer dispensers, and footbaths. Alcohol dispensers are provided at the mall entrance and restrooms. The restrooms are sanitized every 30 minutes.

Everyone will be required to wear face masks at all times. In observance of social distancing, SM lays emphasis on “safe distancing” as this promotes the importance of physical distance with social connectivity. Mallgoers will be enjoined to practice safe malling to contain and overcome the spread of COVID-19.

In line with the government’s rules that discourage loitering in the mall, free Wi-Fi access will be disabled and “leisure” establishments will remain closed. Shoppers are requested to limit malling activities to buying essentials only, such as food and medicine, and accessing non-leisure services.

Taking safety measures up a notch, SM will provide protective equipment for mall employees and agency personnel. All workers will undergo temperature checks at the start of every shift and throughout the day.

As the country heals and recovers from the crisis, SM, together with its employees and partners, will continue to serve and support communities as its malls make everyone’s safety a top priority.

Still with ECQ, the work goes on

Implementing order in public places is no joke especially this time when the place is under Enhanced Community Quarantine.

The work of these frontliners is vital for control measures in places like the Bankerohan Public Market.

These army reservists since Day 1 with the Covid-19 pandemic were already on the streets to help in maintaining order and remind the public to observe the protocol while in public places.

Seeing to it that people wear face mask, observe social distancing, and arm with food and medicine pass for them to be allowed to go out of their respective residences and go to places like public market to buy food.

To them the work continues anywhere in Davao City.  Sharing here their story ….
