Native delicacies served at snack bazaar

Misa de Gallo

Snack bazaar set up for church goers of December dawn masses

The tradition lives on in the Philippines where “kakanin” or the Filipino delicacies are readily available at dawn near Catholic churches after parishioners participate in the early morning masses otherwise known as Misa de Gallo.

It is observed in Catholic churches the dawn masses for nine consecutive mornings starting December 16 until December 24. It is the time of spiritual preparation and purification in celebration of the birth of Jesus. Devotees make it a point to complete the nine dawn masses where prayer intentions are offered.

It is the longest and most important celebration among Filipinos even as this religious celebration is observed by Catholics around the world.

In the city where I live and in support to this celebration, the city government of Davao put up the “Snack Bazaar” at the city hall grounds where entrepreneurs sell famous native delicacies of puto bumbong, puto chesse, suman, biko, (rice cake) and many more paired with hot coffee or “sikwate” hot chocolate. The Snack Bazaar is just a stone throw away from the San Pedro Cathedral where dawn masses are offered starting at 3:30 am and 4:30 am.

Dubbed as “Siyam ka Kaadlawon Snack Bazaar”, it runs from 1:00 am to 7:00 am starting December 16 until the last day of the early morning mass on December 24.
