UNESCO Launches SECCI for SDGs Scorecard

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially launched and turned over to the Government of Malaysia the Social Sciences, Human Sciences, Education, Culture, Communication, and  Information for Sustainable Development Goals Scorecard or SECCI for SDGs Scorecard during the Malaysia-UNESCO Cooperation Programme (MUCP) conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last June 22, 2023.

The SECCI for SDGs Scorecard was developed by the Hydrology for Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) Davao Network and the Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI) to serve as a tool to measure the contribution of various programs, projects, and activities to the SDGs.

Ms. Mayan Jane Inni, Special Project Unit Head of DOST XI said that the tool will be able to help governments, funding institutions, implementers, researchers, students and intended stakeholders to evaluate proposals, ongoing or completed projects in terms of their relevance and impacts to the attainment of the global goals.

“We started by establishing the linkages and partnerships with pentahelix stakeholders. We validated the list of SDGs targets and indicators that would be relevant for the SECCI. Then, we tested it locally through the programs and projects that we have in Davao City,” Ms. Inni added.

The SECCI for SDGs Scorecard was developed with the support of the Malaysia Funds-in-Trust (MFIT) through the UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Jakarta Office.

The Scorecard is patterned after the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation (SETI) for SDG Scorecard in 2018 which was successfully deployed to 335 researchers nationwide, with 9 conducted trainings participated by stakeholders from various sectors. The SETI for SDGs Scorecard was adopted by the UNESCO Office in Asia and the Pacific during the UNESCO Chairs and Category 2 Centres meeting in 2018.
