A domestic helper, if I am to elaborate, helps, assists or does household work for homeowners anywhere in the world and not about sexual acts.  Busy homeowners don’t have time for thorough household chores and for the rich who can afford it, the task is left to the DH.

I’ve known famous and rich families but I have not heard them make fun with their worker and in fact they are grateful as things are easier for them especially with Filipinas who are known to be industrious and hardworking.

But this time that DHs are portrayed as such by influential media network like BBC, the government-owned British Broadcasting Corp for its reportedly “racist and humiliating” portaryal of a Filipina domestic worker is a FOUL, just like what Desperate Housewives did to Filipino doctors in one of their sitcom.

Media is a strong force because it could either make or unmake a person, a country, or a race.

I am a Filipina and I strongly denounced you guys out there making fun of us. You don’t own the universe that you can just make fun of anyone.

I expect those that run the networks as responsible and with ethics.

But as this developed, concerted efforts are being worked out here and in the UK where protest actions are being planned.

An email campaign “condemning” the BBC and a demand for apology are likewise being circulated among the community.

The controversial skit, aired in the September 26 episode of “Harry and Paul,” showed comedian Harry Enfield telling a postman that he is ordering his Filipino maid to mate with his friend Paul Whitehouse.

Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel said the humiliating portrayal of Filipina workers “promotes negative stereotypes that cultivate impunity among those who abuse Filipina workers abroad.”

She added that making overseas Filipinas appear as submissive sex objects reinforces the notion that foreigners could easily hire small and sexy Filipina domestic helpers and turn them into sexual objects.

“By making it a joke, it encourages a consciousness that promotes human trafficking,” Hontiveros said.

BBC stop that dirty game not only among Filipinas but all the women in the world. Your homes too have women that are to be respected by men and everybody ! We do respect men too because we love our fathers, brothers, grandfathers, sons, nephews and male friends all because they have manners. Better be sorry BBC !

Charise Pempengco

Posted by: prixbanzon on: September 17, 2008

Being a member of the Country Program for Children IV of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) I became a child advocate advancing among others the protection on the rights of children and violence against women.

My long exposure to this “labor of love” voluntary work allowed me to see and feel the pain that kids and women got from abusive opposite sex.  I hated them (oppressor) and if only i could embrace those kids everyday, all of them just to lessen the pain.

I learned through the Oprah Winfrey feature of this amazing Filipina girl, Charise, the sad experience she had early in life.

And I salute her mother and Charise for the courage, their determination that led to where they are now.

I admire Charise from the bottom of my heart the confidence she has – very brave, strong, and very natural interacting with famous celebrities.

Watching competitions on TV, especially of kids sporting all their self confidence, kept me wondering where they get all these.

Most of them come from very humble families and others deprive of the chance to have what they want but cannot because resources do not warrant.

With Charise already in the international limelight I believe she can do it till the end.

And with the prodding of her mother to just do the best, the best really came out of her by using to the fullest the talent God gave her.

As a kababayan, me being a Filipina, I salute you young girl Charise – God really is good He allowed you to be in touch with people that will help you bring out your extraordinary talent.  I appreciate your song and in between my day to day work I search for what is new with you – the girl who has a voice that is so powerful yet humble enough to be just the child of God.  (Photo courtesy of Flickr – thank you !)

WTG 8 – Roadhouse Cafe

Posted by: prixbanzon on: September 14, 2008

I’ve tasted the best mango crepe here at Roadhouse Cafe at SM City Davao.  Though there are a lot of good food in here, i go for my dessert – the mango crepe.  It’s tasteful and one order could be shared by three … one part is good enough to end either a lunch or a dinner in this cozy place.  The area is spacious where there is enough space for everybody. Though a public place, a group could dine and at the same time talk serious matters or otherwise.  The setting was made in such a way that each table is not that close with each other thus giving a little privacy. Service is also good as well as the courses.

And because i fell in love with the crepe i tried looking for recipe (not from roadhouse cafe) but you can try it and am sharing you this ….

Crepes:
Pack of Magnolia pancake mix (I tried Pillsbury before,  they didn’t turn out right)
(Use milk instead of water, and butter instead of oil.  Make sure the batter is thinner by adding more milk)

Cream filling:
Mix butter, sugar, and cream in a double boiler until smooth
(Since I was in a hurry, I just cooked everything over low fire using a Teflon flat bottom griddle. Proportion is 1T butter + 2 T sugar + 1/4 cup cream)

Filling;  Diced mangoes (make sure these are sweet by smelling the base, where the stem goes.  It should smell sweet, not sour.  Some mangoes are sweet in spite of the pale or greenish color).  You may also use sliced bananas (lakatan variety, again, make sure these are sweet).

Directions:
1.  Fry pancakes in a little butter on flat bottom griddle.  Make sure to spread out the batter thinly so that it will look and feel like real crepes.
2.  Spread a little cream mixture on the crepe.
3.  Put as many mangoes as you wish.
4.  Fold the crepe.
5.  Top with scoop of vanilla ice cream (mango flavor will do).
7.  Drizzle with chocolate syrup.
8.  Enjoy!

Laarni Grand Star Dreamer – another best from Mindanao

Posted by: prixbanzon on: September 14, 2008

I’ve been to Sultan Kudarat and that’s about six hours from Davao City (where I reside) by bus though that far from the economic hub of the island (Davao City) it’s capital the Tacurong City is a progressive one … business is alive … with banks, big stores, there are internet cafes, restaurants and yet a lot of greens around … along the streets you could buy fresh pineapple .. singkamas and other seasoned fruits.

With Laarni to PDA she was a determined person and like her place it is teeming with development.

Gauging at how the scholars relate with each other, at first Laarni was not well received by the group. I hope it’s not because she’s a promdi she was frank in expressing that she hails from the province.

What is good with her she’s consistent of expressing that she’s proud to be from Sultan Kudarat.

Mindanao has more talents to be discovered and with Manny Pacquiao, the world champ in boxing and Laarani now as the new winner for singing, we from Mindanao has a lot of kababayans to be proud of.

Coming from a humble beginning and just like Manny Pacquiao who was determined to reach that dream … and grabbing that opportunity, made good with the fight – the competition, there is no reason not getting the highest spot.

And to Laarni the battle has started and expectations are big for those who follow her inside the Academy. And when success is with her we also expect she remains humble and her two feet on the ground.

Laarni Lozada of Sultan Kudarat was declared the Grand Star Dreamer in the second season of the ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Dream Academy at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City on Sunday night. Bugoy was first runner -up and Miguel the second runner-up.

Lozada garnered 651,696 votes, or 35.21% of the total text votes for the final, edging out first runner up Bugoy Drilon and second runner up Miguel Mendoza.

The PDA final, dubbed the “Grand Dream Night,” was held for two consecutive nights beginning Saturday. The Saturday show was for the finalists’ performances, while the Sunday telecast was for the announcement of the winners.

Lozada is the second PDA scholar to win the top prize. The first was Yeng Constantino in 2006.

Results of the latest ranking by the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center showed Davao City beating local government units in the capital Metro Manila. In the last survey two years ago, Davao City was tied for No. 1 with Makati City, the nation’s premier financial center.

A total of 90 local government units were included in the survey, metropolitan, mid-sized and small cities. Davao City topped two of six key competitive drivers and scored the highest rate among highly urbanized cities.

Key drivers:

Cost of doing business – No. 1 – Davao City

Infrastructure – No. 1 – Davao City

Dynamism of local economy – No. 1 – Makati City; No. 4 – Davao City

Quality of life – No. 1 – Mandaluyong City; No. 7 – Davao City

Responsiveness of local government – No. 1 – San Juan City; No. 3 – Davao City

Human resources & training – No. 1 – Marikina City; No. 7 – Davao City

Overall among the metro cities:

1. Davao City

2. Quezon City

3. Makati City

4. Manila City

5. Marikina City

6. Lapu-lapu City

7. Paranaque City

8. Muntinlupa City

9. Cebu City

10. Pasay City

Olongapo City topped the mid-sized cities while San Fernando, La Union was No. 1 among small cities.

Noteworthy is Davao City’s improvement in two key drivers – Responsiveness of the local government – ranked No. 6 in 2005 to No. 3, and in Human resources and training – from No. 11 in 2005 to No. 7.

Proud na kababayan – He made it again !

Posted by: prixbanzon on: June 29, 2008

I salute his determination and courage … from being poor and now enjoys the luxuries of life, I think the little children that share shelter in a house that he built inspire him each day. The difficulties that he went through also inspire him to do more. His family made him whole. The life of Manny Pacquiao are full of lessons that any one of us could take a look and be inspired to do the share of living and giving the best we can in life. My only wish is Manny to just be the same old self who for once in his life started simple and friendly. I think these traits are still with him and when feet are on the ground nothing could bring a person wrong. Congratulations to Manny, the champion that live about three hours by land from where I live.

I was cooking lunch when the fight begun and we were glued to the Super Radyo (The Kapuso Radio Station) that carried live the Pacquiao-Diaz Fight. The sportscasters made good in their reporting. Gauging at how Pacman did the works I told my husband Pacman will end it at the 9th round. And true enough the fight ended after round nine. I viewed the delayed telecast of the fight and what touches me most was when Diaz had his back flat on the floor in pain and Manny approached him and grasped his hand asking him (Diaz) to stand up. Kindness is the secret of living peacefully and I would likened those gestures of the two as expression of kindness for each other and just being sport in a fight that was tough.

The net already run stories of the boxing bout and news also worldwide declared him the champion ……… …..Manny Pacquiao knocked out David Diaz with just 36 seconds left in the ninth round of their 12-round bout, wresting the World Boxing Council lightweight title from the Mexican American.

WTG 7 – Another coffee shop

Posted by: prixbanzon on: May 13, 2008

The yellow hauz that I just visited gave me a good impression of just the right coffee shop around town. There are choices for those who want to stay indoor and an outdoor space just under the wide shady trees but with huge umbrellas to shed guests from the heat of the sun or the rain. There are many selection of the coffee treat as well as pastries. But what made our mouth water is the choices of cheesecakes. Very delicious yet relaxing indeed.
